Table Linen Sizing Guide: From Standard Banquet Tables to Custom Round Configurations

07 April 2026  ·  4 min read  ·  event catering hospitality table linens

Getting table linen sizing wrong is a surprisingly common and costly mistake in hospitality procurement. Tablecloths that are too short look unprofessional and are functionally inadequate — they fail to drape properly over the table edge, expose table legs in formal settings, and shift visibly during service. Tablecloths that are excessively long create a tripping hazard, drag on the floor, and consume more fabric than necessary — increasing purchase cost and laundry spend. This guide provides the practical sizing reference that procurement teams, event managers, and F&B directors need to specify table linens correctly for every common table format.

Standard Drop Lengths and Why They Matter

Table linen drop — the length the tablecloth hangs below the table edge on each side — determines both the aesthetic and functional performance of the linen. In professional food service, three drop lengths are standard. Floor length (full drop, typically 30-36 inches/76-91cm from table edge to floor) is used for banquet tables in formal events, awards dinners, and exhibition stands where a fully concealed table appearance is required. Chair height drop (15-18 inches/38-46cm) is the most common restaurant setting — the tablecloth hangs to approximately seat height, maintaining a professional appearance while keeping the cloth above foot traffic level. Quarter drop (6-8 inches/15-20cm) is used in casual dining settings for a relaxed appearance. Specifying the wrong drop length for your table format results in a tablecloth that doesn’t perform as expected.

Sizing Reference for Standard Table Formats

For rectangular trestle/banquet tables: a 72″×30″ (183×76cm) trestle table with a 30″ floor-length drop requires a 132″×90″ (335×229cm) tablecloth. At chair-height drop (18″), the same table requires a 108″×66″ (274×168cm) cloth. For cocktail reception tables (typically 30″ diameter, 42″ bar height), a full floor-length covering requires a 132″×132″ square cloth or a 120″ (304cm) round. For round dining tables, the formula is: (Table diameter in inches) + (2 × desired drop in inches) = tablecloth diameter required. A standard 60″ (152cm) round dining table with an 18″ drop needs a 96″ (244cm) round tablecloth. Cambay Industries manufactures round tablecloths from 54″ to 144″ diameter with any drop length, and custom oblong, oval, and fitted stretch-band options on request.

Napkin and Runner Sizing Standards

Napkins for fine dining service should be a minimum 50×50cm (20″×20″) to allow proper table presentation fold patterns (bishop’s hat, lotus, cardinal). For casual dining and event catering, 40×40cm napkins are standard. Restaurant runners typically come in 45cm or 64cm width — the 64cm runner is preferred for formal banquet overlapping presentation on standard 76cm-wide trestle tables, as it provides visible overhang on both sides. Placemats for formal restaurant settings are typically 30×45cm or 35×48cm — sized to contain a full place setting (plate, cutlery, and wine glass) without extending past the table edge.
