As hotels accelerate their sustainability commitments — driven by guest expectations, ESG investor criteria, and regulatory pressure — the materials specified across all hotel textile categories are under increased scrutiny. Shower curtains represent one of the clearest product substitution opportunities: the traditional PVC (polyvinyl chloride) curtain, already largely phased out in institutional settings due to dioxin release concerns, has been replaced in many properties by either PEVA (polyethylene vinyl acetate) or woven polyester fabric curtains. But PEVA and polyester are not equivalent alternatives — each has distinct environmental credentials, operational characteristics, and total cost implications. This analysis helps hotel sustainability and procurement teams make the right choice for their properties.
The Case Against PVC — And Why It Still Exists
Standard PVC shower curtains have been implicated in off-gassing of plasticizers (particularly phthalates and organotins) in enclosed bathroom environments. PVC production is energy-intensive, requires chlorine chemistry, and presents end-of-life challenges as PVC cannot be easily recycled in standard municipal plastic streams. Despite these concerns, PVC remains in use in some budget hospitality segments because of its low initial purchase cost and effective waterproofing. Any hotel with meaningful sustainability commitments should have eliminated PVC shower curtains from their specification, replacing them with either PEVA or woven polyester alternatives.

PEVA: The Chlorine-Free Plastic Option
PEVA is a chlorine-free, BPA-free plasticiser-free alternative to PVC that has become the default “eco” shower curtain specification in the mid-market hotel segment. PEVA’s key advantages are that it contains no chlorine chemistry, is recyclable at specialist facilities, is free from phthalate plasticisers, is odourless compared to PVC’s characteristic “new shower curtain” smell, and is significantly cheaper per unit than woven polyester. Its limitations are that it is not machine washable (wipe-clean only — severely limiting hygiene and lifespan management options), it has limited design flexibility (only solid colours and prints are feasible on plastic film), and its end-of-life recyclability remains dependent on specialist plastic film recovery infrastructure that is not universally available.
Woven Polyester: The Premium Sustainable Choice
Woven polyester shower curtains address the functional limitations of PEVA through a fundamentally different material approach. A 150 GSM woven polyester curtain with DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish provides comparable water resistance to PEVA, is machine washable up to 60°C, maintains its appearance through 200+ laundry cycles, can be custom printed with any design via sublimation or screen printing, and can be specified in recycled polyester construction — with Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification available for hotel ESG reporting. The higher initial cost (typically 3–5× PEVA) is offset by the dramatically longer service life: a quality woven polyester curtain replaced every 24–36 months compares favourably in total cost to PEVA replaced every 6–12 months in commercial settings.
Making the Decision for Your Hotel
For budget and economy hotel segments where initial procurement cost is the primary driver and bathroom aesthetics are not a brand differentiator, quality PEVA provides an adequate, chlorine-free solution with reasonable value. For mid-market, four-star, and luxury hotel properties where bathroom quality is a significant component of the guest experience and brand promise, woven polyester represents the correct long-term specification — delivering better aesthetics, longer service life, lower total cost over a 3-year horizon, and stronger ESG credentials through machine washability (reducing disposal waste) and recycled content options. Cambay Industries can advise on the right specification for your property tier and supply both formats with full documentation. Contact our hospitality team to discuss your requirements.
